Mumbai, Jan 30 (NationPress) Actress Swara Bhasker has openly criticized the social media platform X following the suspension of her account due to alleged copyright infringements.
Taking to her Instagram, the actress voiced her discontent, explaining that two of her tweets were flagged for copyright issues, which resulted in her account being locked and eventually suspended. In her detailed message, Swara clarified that one of the flagged images included the famous phrase “Gandhi Hum Sharmindaa Hain, Tere Qaatil Zindagi Hain,” a recognized slogan from India’s progressive movement.
The 'Veere Di Wedding' star defended her use of this image, stating it represents an urban, modern folk idiom that is not subject to copyright.
Alongside a screenshot of her suspended account on X, Swara commented, “This is unbelievable!!!! Dear X, two images from my tweets have been categorized as ‘copyright infringements’. As a result, my account is locked and permanent suspension has been sanctioned by your teams. One image has an orange background with text in Hindi Devnaagri script that says ‘Gandhi Hum Sharmindaa hain, Tere qaatil zindagi hain’ — a well-known slogan from the progressive movement in India. There’s no copyright violation here. It’s similar to an urban modern folk idiom.”
She further added, “The second image labeled as a violation depicts MY OWN child, her face obscured, waving an Indian flag with the text ‘HAPPY REPUBLIC DAY India.’ How can this be considered copyright infringement??? Who owns the copyright to my child's likeness??? Both complaints are ludicrous and indefensible by any reasonable legal definition of copyright. If these tweets have been mass reported, it appears to be an attempt to harass me and suppress my freedom of speech and expression. Please reconsider and overturn your ruling.”
Previously, actress Kangana Ranaut had her account suspended in May 2021 for “repeated violations” of Twitter’s policies on hateful conduct and abusive behavior. After two years, her account has now been restored.
