Ahmedabad, Sep 9 (NationPress) In a remarkable achievement for public health, Gujarat has been acknowledged as the leading state in the Government of India’s ambitious ‘Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan’, which targets the complete elimination of tuberculosis (TB) from the nation by 2025.
Within the framework of the National TB Elimination Programme, Gujarat has shown exceptional dedication by actively identifying TB patients on a large scale and providing them with free treatment in government facilities.
During a visit to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, a recovered TB patient recounted his experience of receiving prompt and free treatment, emphasizing how early diagnosis and appropriate medication facilitated his full recovery.
Health professionals urge the public to be vigilant about common TB symptoms like persistent cough, chest pain, fever, and unintentional weight loss.
“Many people dismiss these symptoms, assuming it’s just a cold or seasonal ailment. However, timely diagnosis is essential for effective TB treatment,” stated Dr. Ghanshyam Borisagar, Head of the TB and Chest Department at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital.
To alleviate the financial burden on TB patients during their treatment, the government allocates Rs 1,000 monthly under the Nikshay Poshan Yojana. This assistance allows patients to maintain a nutritious diet and manage their health more effectively during treatment.
“Every month, Rs 1,000 is directly credited to the patient’s bank account via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) to cater to their nutritional and medicinal requirements throughout the treatment phase,” explained Dr. Chirag Dhuvad, District TB Officer of Ahmedabad.
Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a TB-free India by 2025, Gujarat has made significant progress under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.
In 2024, Gujarat met 95% of its targets for identifying and registering TB patients, successfully identifying 137,929 individuals and ensuring treatment for 124,581.
The state has also excelled in community engagement, with 10,682 'Nikshay Mitras' (supporting volunteers) registered on the Nikshay Portal, contributing to the distribution of 349,534 nutrition kits to TB patients statewide.
These achievements have positioned Gujarat at the forefront of India’s TB elimination efforts, making it the leading state in the TB Mukt Bharat initiative. This success underscores the importance of effective governance, public awareness, medical support, and community involvement — all working collaboratively towards a TB-free India.
