Abu Dhabi, Sep 10 (NationPress) Afghanistan commenced their Asia Cup journey with an impressive victory, defeating Hong Kong by 94 runs in a Group B match held at the Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.
This triumph marks the third-largest margin of victory in the T20 format of the continental tournament. Unfortunately, the match featured a less-than-stellar display of fielding from both teams, with a total of eight catches dropped, tying the record for the most in men's T20I since 2020.
In their chase of 189, Hong Kong faced a rocky start as Fazalhaq Farooqi claimed the wicket of opener Anshuman Rath, who was dismissed for a duck on just the second ball of the innings.
Shortly thereafter, Zeeshan Ali and Nizakat Khan fell victim to Afghanistan's early dominance. Kalhan Challu became the fourth batsman to be dismissed in the powerplay, leaving Hong Kong in dire straits at 23/4 after six overs. Kinchit Shah also struggled and was dismissed by spinner Noor Ahmad in the tenth over.
Babar Hayat stood as the lone performer for Hong Kong, contributing 39 runs with three boundaries before being outdone by Gulbadin Naib. Ultimately, Afghanistan's bowlers restricted Hong Kong to a mere 94/9, marking a strong start to their tournament.
Fazalhaq Farooqi and Gulbadin Naib each claimed two wickets, while Rashid Khan, Noor Ahmad, and Azmatullah Omarzai took one wicket each.
Earlier in the innings, half-centuries from Sediqullah Atal and Azmatullah Omarzai propelled Afghanistan to a total of 188/6 in 20 overs.
Choosing to bat first, Afghanistan's opener Sediqullah Atal initiated the innings with a boundary on the very first ball. Following it up with consecutive fours against Ayush Shukla, he set a positive tone for the opening over.
Continuing his aggressive play, Atal scored freely until Rahmanullah Gurbaz hit a six off Shukla before being caught out on the following ball. Ibrahim Zadran, who batted at No. 3, had minimal impact and was dismissed by Ateeq Iqbal in the fourth over.
Despite losing two early wickets, Atal and Mohammad Nabi formed a crucial partnership, stabilizing the innings and guiding Afghanistan to 41/2 by the end of the powerplay.
Nabi showcased his prowess against Aizaz Khan, hitting him for a four and a six in his first over, and then two more boundaries in his next, pushing Afghanistan's score to 77/2 at the halfway mark.
The 51-run partnership came to an end in the 11th over when Kinchit Shah caught Nabi out for 33. Gulbadin Naib, who struck Shah for a six, couldn’t sustain the momentum and fell victim to the spinner in the 13th over, adding pressure on Afghanistan. Azmatullah Omarzai joined Atal at this critical juncture.
Atal reached his well-deserved half-century, scoring 73 runs off 52 balls, including three sixes and six fours. In the last overs, he and Azmatullah accelerated the scoring, with Azmatullah achieving his maiden T20I fifty in just 20 balls, smashing Shukla for three consecutive sixes.
Afghanistan concluded their innings at 188/6 in 20 overs, having added only nine runs in the final over, while Hong Kong's Kinchit Shah was the standout bowler with figures of 2-24 in three overs.
