Abu Dhabi, Sep 9 (NationPress) Afghanistan's all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai stole the spotlight during the Asia Cup 2025 match against Hong Kong with a sensational performance, scoring an incredible 53 runs off merely 21 balls at the Zayed International Cricket Stadium.
In doing so, he set the record for the fastest fifty by an Afghan player in T20 internationals, marking a significant moment in Afghanistan's cricket history. He surpassed the previous record held by Mohammad Nabi and Gulbadin Naib, who both achieved their fifties in 21 balls – Nabi against Ireland and Naib against India.
Afghanistan began their innings shakily at 95/4 when Omarzai entered the fray. Demonstrating aggressive intent from the very first ball, he countered the bowlers with remarkable power, including three consecutive sixes off Ayush Shukla’s over, which turned the tide in Afghanistan’s favor.
Omarzai completed his half-century in just 20 balls, the fastest in Afghanistan's T20I history, before being dismissed for 53. His explosive innings, featuring five sixes and two fours, provided crucial momentum in the death overs. Alongside opener Sediqullah Atal, who contributed an unbeaten 73 off 52 balls, Omarzai formed an 82-run partnership that propelled Afghanistan to a formidable total of 188/6 in their 20 overs.
Despite losing two early wickets, Atal and Nabi built an essential partnership that kept the scoreboard ticking, reaching 41/2 at the end of the powerplay.
Nabi particularly targeted pacer Aizaz Khan, hitting two boundaries in his first over. In his subsequent over, he struck Khan for two more boundaries, bringing Afghanistan to 77/2 at the halfway mark.
Spinner Kinchit Shah eventually broke the 51-run partnership in the 11th over, as Nabi departed after scoring 33, caught at long-off. Gulbadin Naib, who hit Shah for a six, couldn’t maintain the momentum and was dismissed, increasing the pressure on the Afghan side. Omarzai then joined Atal in the middle.
Meanwhile, Atal reached his well-earned half-century off 41 balls.
