New Delhi, Feb 16 (NationPress) In a heart-wrenching encounter, Afghanistan faced a devastating defeat against South Africa during a double Super Over, but Azmatullah Omarzai showcased his abilities by scoring 16 runs in the first Super Over. However, in the second Super Over, he struggled with the ball, giving away 23 runs, including three sixes, resulting in Afghanistan losing a match they nearly had under control.

Heading into their crucial match against the UAE in New Delhi, Afghanistan needed a win to revive their chances of progressing to the Super Eights. Despite having mixed bowling statistics—being the team's leading wicket-taker with four wickets but conceding over 40 runs in both matches at an economy rate of 10.3—Omarzai rose to the occasion. On Monday, he delivered an outstanding performance with figures of 4-15 and an unbeaten 40 runs, helping Afghanistan secure their first victory of the tournament. This achievement made him just the third player in T20 WC history, alongside Dwayne Bravo and Shakib Al Hasan, to take four wickets and score over 30 runs in the same match.

“Azmat is undoubtedly among the best in today's cricket scene. His contributions in bowling, batting, and fielding make him a standout player, regardless of the format,” remarked Afghanistan all-rounder Gulbadin Naib in the mixed zone after the match when asked about Omarzai.

The opening ball of the match was a stunning delivery that left Aryansh Sharma chasing after it, leading to a close call on whether Rahmanullah Gurbaz caught it cleanly before it hit the ground. The umpire ruled it not out, allowing Sharma to continue, but Omarzai's threat was evident.

The next deliveries kept Aryansh on edge, and it was the fourth ball that finally brought Omarzai his first wicket. Naib, who has witnessed Omarzai evolve from a promising talent to a key player, had encouraged him to take five wickets that day.

“This morning, I told Azmat, ‘I need five wickets from you,’ and he looked at me with determination. He has shown he can do it, as evidenced by his five-wicket haul against England in the Champions Trophy,” Naib explained.

On a pitch that had early moisture but little assistance for bowlers, UAE built an 84-run partnership between Alishan Sharafu and Sohaib Khan, with Sohaib's 68 off 48 balls setting a solid foundation until Omarzai intervened.

During a critical moment in the 15th over, Omarzai managed to dismiss Syed Haider, and later, a well-timed bouncer sent Sohaib packing for 68, disrupting UAE's momentum as they scored just 46 runs in their last five overs.

“It's crucial to get it right on a small field like this in Delhi. Azmat's boldness made a significant difference. We had areas where we didn't bowl to our standard initially, but when we executed our plans, it was tough for the batters,” noted head coach Jonathan Trott during the post-match press conference.

Omarzai’s four wickets largely came from well-placed deliveries, marking Afghanistan's best bowling performance after their heartbreaking loss to South Africa.

“Professional players like Azmat experience highs and lows, but the team atmosphere and coaching staff provided the support we needed. The coach’s acknowledgment of our efforts today was uplifting,” Omarzai reflected.

The style of bowler he is—whether it’s out-swing, in-swing, or varying lengths—has evolved significantly. Trott praised Omarzai's progress over the past year, noting that he is now recognized globally, and his experiences in various franchise leagues have only enhanced his skills.

Omarzai's contributions during the run chase illustrated not only his abilities as a world-class all-rounder but also his resilience developed through years of competitive cricket. A six over long-off eased the pressure when Afghanistan needed 28 runs off 18 balls, followed by another six that showcased his skill.

With 17 runs needed off the final eight balls, Omarzai struck a crucial boundary, effectively sealing the match. Though Afghanistan’s prospects of advancing to the Super Eights remain slim, Omarzai's reputation as a world-class all-rounder has been reaffirmed.

As Afghanistan has ascended in international cricket from a fledgling team to formidable competitors, the contributions of spin duo Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi, along with Gurbaz, have been pivotal.
