Abu Dhabi, Sep 18 (NationPress) Afghanistan emerged victorious at the toss and chose to bat first against Sri Lanka in a crucial Group B clash of the 2025 Men’s T20 Asia Cup at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium on Thursday.
Sri Lanka heads into this final Group B match sitting at the top of the points table with two wins from two matches, while Afghanistan, currently in third place, is in a must-win situation. A victory for Afghanistan would propel them ahead of Bangladesh and secure a place in the Super Fours.
After the toss, Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan announced that Darwish Rasooli and Mujeeb Ur Rahman would replace AM Ghazanfar and Gulbadin Naib. “It is crucial to set a score on this wicket. This is a must-win match; we must focus on the basics. The pitch is new; we have played extensively in Abu Dhabi, and a score of 165+ is competitive,” he stated.
Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka mentioned that left-arm spin-bowling all-rounder Dunith Wellalage would replace off-spinner Maheesh Theekshana. “I would have made the same decision. Our middle-order batting has been discussed; we have two in-form openers, which is an advantage for us. We need to enhance our middle-order performance; execution is key,” he commented.
The pitch assessment by Mike Haysman and Ravi Shastri indicated, “The surfaces here are quite different. There is significantly more grass than on the adjoining pitch. It could be two-paced, offering some assistance to the fast bowlers. Batters must allow themselves time to settle.”
“We are fortunate to have a breeze, which will aid the players. The ball tends to come onto the bat better here compared to Dubai. Although the ball may not turn much, Afghanistan’s spinners are capable of weaving a web around any opponent. A strong start and continuous strike rotation are essential rather than seeking big hits,” they added.
