New Delhi, May 12 (NationPress) The well-being of nurses is essential for the enhancement of health systems and contributes significantly to the nation's progress, stated Union Health Minister J P Nadda on International Nurses Day this Monday.
International Nurses Day is celebrated annually on May 12 to express appreciation for their tireless service and to advocate for their health and well-being. Commending the efforts of nurses, Nadda emphasized the necessity to increase funding for nurses and ensure their protection and empowerment.
“On this International Nurses Day, we honor the compassion, resilience, and dedication of our nurses. We acknowledge that the well-being of nurses is intrinsically connected to the robustness of our health systems and the growth of our nation,” Nadda mentioned in a post on the social media platform X.
“Investing in nurses equates to investing in healthier communities, thriving societies, and a more resilient future. Let us appreciate, protect, and empower those who devote their lives to caring for others, today and every day,” he further added.
This year’s theme, “Caring for Nurses Strengthens Economies,” highlights the vital role nurses play not only in providing quality healthcare but also in fortifying health systems and propelling economic development.
Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Anupriya Patel referred to the nurses’ contributions to society as exceptional and unforgettable. She also praised their “relentless efforts and commitment.”

Meanwhile, the World Health Organization (WHO) has highlighted the disparities faced by the nursing workforce, despite some improvements.
The State of the World’s Nursing 2025 (SoWN) report, based on data from 194 countries through the National Health Workforce Accounts, indicated that significant disparities in nurse availability across regions and countries pose risks to global health objectives.
“The inequities in the global nursing workforce leave many individuals without access to essential health services, jeopardizing progress towards universal health coverage (UHC), global health security, and health-related development goals,” the report stated.
Evidence shows that global progress in reducing the nursing workforce shortage has improved from 6.2 million in 2020 to 5.8 million in 2023, with expectations to decline to 4.1 million by 2030.
However, this overall progress conceals profound regional disparities: approximately 78 percent of the world's nurses are situated in countries that account for only 49 percent of the global population.
Low- and middle-income countries are encountering challenges in graduating, hiring, and retaining nurses within their health systems and must increase domestic investments to create and maintain jobs.
Likewise, high-income countries need to prepare for a sizable number of retiring nurses and reassess their dependency on foreign-trained nurses by strengthening bilateral agreements with the countries from which they recruit.
