Bhubaneswar, July 8 (NationPress) The recent diarrhoea outbreak originating from Ustapalli village in the Digapahandi block of Ganjam district has been effectively managed through a series of coordinated field interventions and awareness campaigns, as confirmed by the state health department on Tuesday.
The department reported that the infection, which emerged sporadically on July 6, has been successfully contained before further spread, aided by diligent door-to-door monitoring and prompt medical action.
As stated by the Director of Public Health, Dr. Nilakantha Mishra, on Tuesday, a total of 11 cases were documented from Ustapalli village between July 6 and the afternoon of July 8.
Fortunately, no new cases were reported from the village on Tuesday.
Among the 11 patients affected, six were referred to MKCG Medical College & Hospital in Berhampur, while five received treatment at the Digapahandi Community Health Centre (CHC).
As of Tuesday afternoon, five patients from MKCG have been discharged following their recovery. Additionally, one five-year-old child exhibiting respiratory complications is currently undergoing further treatment. All five patients treated at the Digapahandi CHC have also been released after complete recovery.
The health department has also dispelled rumors regarding the deaths of two patients attributed to diarrhoea. Preliminary investigations have determined that diarrhoea was not the cause of death in either case.
It was revealed post-mortem that one of the deceased, 70-year-old Das Sabar, who died at home on July 3, was suffering from melena (black stools indicative of gastrointestinal bleeding).
Additionally, initial investigations suggest that his death was unrelated to diarrhoea and attributed to pre-existing conditions.
Even though the outbreak has been contained, both the Health & Family Welfare Department and the Panchayati Raj & Drinking Water Department have directed all field officials to persist with awareness initiatives and regular chlorination and sanitation efforts to avert any recurrence.
