New Delhi, Dec 9 (NationPress) Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, has voiced her profound concern regarding the declining health of Khaleda Zia, Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and also a former Prime Minister, expressing her hopes for a swift recovery.
In an email interaction with IANS, Hasina was prompted to comment on Zia's serious medical state and the reports indicating that security personnel had been stationed at the hospital for her care. She replied, “I am deeply worried to learn that Begum Khaleda Zia is unwell, and I will pray for her recovery.”
The 79-year-old Zia has been enduring several chronic health issues, such as heart complications, diabetes, arthritis, liver cirrhosis, and kidney difficulties. She is currently under strict monitoring in the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) of Evercare Hospital in Dhaka, where both local and global specialists are managing her treatment.
Medical sources indicate that Zia was admitted to Evercare on the night of November 23 on her medical board's recommendation after being diagnosed with infections impacting her heart and lungs. Due to her worsening condition, she was moved to the CCU on November 27 for constant observation.
In the meantime, plans to transfer her to London for advanced medical care have encountered setbacks. Local media outlets reported that the special air ambulance, organized through the Emir of Qatar, was unable to land in Dhaka due to technical difficulties. Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the BNP Secretary General, stated, “The air ambulance won't be arriving today due to technical issues. If all goes well, it may reach Dhaka by Saturday.”
He further mentioned that the decision regarding Khaleda Zia's travel would rest entirely on her health status. “A medical procedure is scheduled for today, after which doctors will assess her fitness for flying. Everything hinges on her condition. If she is deemed fit for travel and receives clearance from the medical board, then she could depart on Sunday (December 7),” he added.
Earlier, on Thursday, Zia's personal doctor and a member of the BNP Standing Committee, A Z M Zahid Hossain, had indicated that she was initially expected to fly to London on Friday, contingent upon obtaining medical clearance.
