Dhaka, Nov 30 (NationPress) The Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia is currently in a critical condition at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka. She has been admitted to the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) and is under the care of both local and international specialists, as reported by local media citing BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
During a press briefing at the party chairperson's office in Gulshan late Saturday, he stated, "As you are all aware, the undisputed leader of Bangladesh and the Mother of Democracy, Begum Khaleda Zia, has been receiving treatment at Evercare Hospital for several days due to her severe health issues."
Reports indicate that her health has not improved and remains critical.
The 80-year-old former prime minister has a history of multiple health complications, including cardiac problems, diabetes, arthritis, liver cirrhosis, and kidney issues.
She was admitted to Evercare Hospital on November 23 for routine medical examinations, during which a chest infection was identified, leading to her hospitalization for further treatment.
A medical board led by Professor Shahabuddin Talukder has been managing her care, and her condition has worsened in the past two days. In response, the BNP held special prayers nationwide on Friday for her recovery, according to local media.
Concern among the public is growing, and Zia's son and BNP's acting Chairman Tarique Rahman expressed on Facebook, "During such a crisis, like any son, I deeply long for my mother's affection and presence. However, unlike many, the chance to make an independent decision in this matter is neither fully open nor entirely within my control."
Earlier on Saturday afternoon, Mahedi Amin, an advisor to Tarique Rahman and party spokesperson, shared on Facebook that efforts are being made to facilitate Khaleda Zia's treatment abroad.
He mentioned that arrangements are underway to transport her to London for advanced medical treatment once her condition is stable, including plans to secure a specially equipped air ambulance. However, doctors have confirmed that she is not yet in a condition suitable for travel.
