Dhaka, Nov 29 (NationPress) The acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Tarique Rahman, stated on Saturday that he has a strong desire to return to Bangladesh and be by the side of his critically ill mother and party leader, Khaleda Zia. However, he noted that the current political situation poses challenges to his return.
Rahman expressed his sentiments on social media, encouraging the public to pray for his mother’s recovery and expressing hope that he can finally return to Bangladesh when the political climate becomes more favorable.
According to local news reports, Khaleda Zia's health has worsened, and she is currently under close observation in the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka.
“In this moment of crisis, I yearn for my mother's loving presence, just like any child does. Yet, unlike others, I am bound by constraints that limit my ability to act. I am unable to elaborate on this delicate matter. Our family remains optimistic that once the political circumstances allow, my long-awaited return to my homeland will finally be realized,” Rahman stated.
The hospital has seen a surge of party leaders and supporters visiting throughout the day, reflecting growing concern for her health.
Senior BNP figures, including Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, were also present at the hospital late Friday night.
In a statement to the press in Dhaka on Friday, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir characterized Khaleda Zia's health status as “very critical” and urged the nation to pray for her well-being.
“As you are aware, our leader, Begum Khaleda Zia, has fallen ill and is currently hospitalized. Doctors informed us last night (Thursday) that her health condition is extremely critical,” the BNP leader was quoted by Bangladeshi media outlet UNB.
Reports indicate that Khaleda Zia was admitted to the hospital on the night of November 23 upon medical advice after being diagnosed with infections impacting her heart and lungs.
She is also contending with pneumonia and is under intensive observation in the hospital's CCU, with both local and international specialists overseeing her treatment, as reported by UNB.
