Dhaka, May 3 (NationPress) Conversations in Bangladesh are intensifying regarding the possible comeback of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia's son, Tarique Rahman, the Acting Chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), who is "actively contemplating" steering the party from within the country.
Rahman, currently directing the BNP from London, finds himself at a pivotal moment. Recently acquitted in significant cases, including the August 21 grenade attack, he faces few legal obstacles to his return. Analysts suggest he may be gauging the political climate amid the ongoing pressures facing the Yunus administration, which is expected to fulfill its reform commitments and organize elections.
The BNP is calling for an immediate election this year and has warned of potential street protests should delays occur, insisting that long-term reforms should only proceed under a democratically elected government. The critical question is whether Rahman can provide effective leadership during these politically tumultuous times in Bangladesh. The nation has been striving for a transition towards a more prosperous and moderate Islamic state since the collapse of the Awami League government led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina last August.
In a related development, Khaleda Zia is anticipated to return to Bangladesh from London this coming Sunday or Monday, contingent upon the availability of a special air ambulance. Preparations are underway for this transport, and if it materializes, she will be back on Sunday; otherwise, she may return via a scheduled Bangladesh Biman flight the next day.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir stated that Zia will be accompanied by her two daughters-in-law, Zubaida Rahman and Syeda Shamila Rahman Sithi.
Additionally, the BNP has addressed a letter to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) requesting enhanced security for Zubaida Rahman, due to alleged threats to her safety as a member of the Zia family and the spouse of Tarique Rahman.
The correspondence, signed by Khaleda’s private secretary ABM Abdus Sattar on April 30, delineates a four-tier security protocol, which includes armed guards, police escorts with vehicles, a police presence at their residence, and the installation of archways at their home.
Opponents argue that Tarique Rahman is jeopardizing his wife's safety and employing her as a "human shield" to evaluate the safety of his own potential return to the contentious political landscape in Bangladesh.
It is noteworthy that Khaleda Zia was sentenced to seven years in prison and fined Tk 1 million in the Zia Charitable Trust graft case on October 29, 2018, and was imprisoned at the Central Jail in Old Dhaka. Following the ousting of the Sheikh Hasina government by a student-led mass movement on August 5, Khaleda was released by President Mohammed Shahabuddin via executive order, and her sentences were subsequently annulled.
