New Delhi, Feb 14 (NationPress) Following the recent election results that showed overwhelming support for the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), its Chairman Tarique Rahman is poised to take on the role of Prime Minister, stirring significant interest in his personal and political journey.

This intrigue largely stems from his lengthy absence from Bangladesh, where he previously operated behind the scenes.

Numerous video clips circulating on social media depict him in various situations. In one clip, he advises followers against excessive praise, stating he dislikes it. In another, he admonishes supporters for chanting slogans, referring to them as “newcomers” and encouraging them to seek wisdom from seasoned BNP members.

In a different instance, his vehicle halted at a traffic light, and despite a police officer urging him to proceed, he chose to remain stopped.

As the eldest son of former President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, Rahman ascended within the party ranks during the 1990s and early 2000s, becoming a significant behind-the-scenes player.

After facing legal challenges and political pressures at home, he spent approximately 17 years in exile in London, yet continued to steer party strategies and influence BNP supporters.

His return to active politics in December followed a notable electoral resurgence for the party.

Often referred to as the “dark prince” due to his inclination to operate in the background, Rahman has faced numerous criminal accusations and convictions in Bangladesh, which his supporters argue are politically charged, while detractors label them as proof of corruption and misuse of power.

These legal issues played a crucial role during his time in exile and remain a sensitive aspect of his public image.

While some view him as a capable leader who can unify and revitalize the party, critics regard him as a dynastic figure whose return may exacerbate divisions. Upon taking office, he will confront immediate challenges including political consolidation, diplomatic adjustments, economic stabilization, managing fundamentalist pressures, and restoring law and order along with public trust in institutions.

The new administration must translate electoral success into legitimate political authority while steering clear of divisive actions that could incite unrest.

Initial priorities will include forming a competent cabinet, stabilizing party dynamics after years of exile or factionalism, and demonstrating a commitment to inclusive governance to alleviate public concerns.

Re-establishing pragmatic relations with India is a pressing diplomatic objective, as New Delhi has indicated a willingness to engage but will scrutinize Dhaka's stance on sensitive topics like the status of exiled political figures and outreach towards Pakistan.

Additionally, Dhaka must navigate pressures from Pakistan and China to reshape diplomatic relations following overtures from the interim government led by Muhammad Yusun towards Islamabad and Beijing.

Moreover, the reaction of China to the interim government's trade deal with the United States remains to be seen.

The nation’s garment and textile industry, which is critical for exports and job creation, is experiencing disruption and increased competition but is expected to benefit from the new deal.

However, rising inflation and unemployment have diminished public tolerance, making economic recovery a political necessity. The health sector faces significant challenges, especially following the withdrawal of USAID.

While the election results may have sidelined Islamist parties' influence, pressure from conservative religious factions continues, particularly regarding issues of gender and religious equality.

Moreover, the law-and-order situation has deteriorated since the unrest in 2024, resulting in assaults on Awami League members and the lynching of Hindus, which has also negatively affected the morale of the police force. The dark prince, now under the public gaze, faces a challenging and extensive journey ahead.
