Seoul, March 25 (NationPress) The government of South Korea is set to nurture approximately 27,000 talents in the bio-health sector this year, as part of its strategy to stimulate industry growth, as stated by the Ministry of Health and Welfare on Tuesday.

This initiative was revealed during a meeting of the bio-health innovation committee and is part of a larger government project aimed at cultivating a total of 108,000 specialists in the field by 2027, as reported by Yonhap news agency.

The targeted experts will encompass physician-scientists and emerging talents holding master's or doctoral degrees in cutting-edge technologies pertinent to bio-health.

To achieve this objective, the government plans to enhance support for collaboration between private enterprises and academic institutions within the industry, according to the ministry.

During the meeting, the government also deliberated on methods to simplify regulations that impede the growth of the bio-health industry, such as validation guidelines for medical device software, and to alleviate the burdens associated with high-risk clinical research projects on advanced regenerative medicine.

Previously, the Ministry of Economy and Finance indicated that, as part of its new growth engine initiative, it will amplify investments in bio and medical research and development to bolster the nation’s readiness to combat infectious diseases.

Specifically, it will back 14 vaccine development projects and 34 diagnostic and treatment development projects this year.

These initiatives will encompass the creation of treatments for viruses to address the so-called Disease X, which refers to pathogens that could potentially trigger another pandemic, alongside advancements in gene therapy technologies.

Furthermore, the government will formulate an innovation strategy for the bio-health cluster and advocate for the establishment of a quantum strategy committee as part of its efforts to foster the advancement of new industries, stated the ministry.

Additionally, the ministry also unveiled plans to cultivate new growth engines for the economy.

The government aims to develop a cloud data center utilizing domestically produced artificial intelligence (AI) chips and establish a national AI computing center, it reported.
