Hyderabad, Oct 24 (NationPress) The Drugs Control Administration of Telangana executed surprise inspections at various gyms on Friday, part of a focused initiative to uncover the illicit stockpiling and distribution of anabolic-androgenic steroids and cardiac stimulants, like Mephentermine Sulphate injections, aimed at gym enthusiasts for misuse in bodybuilding.
The Drug Control Administration (DCA) emphasized that the misuse of prescribed medications such as anabolic-androgenic steroids and Mephentermine Sulphate can lead to serious health issues, including cardiovascular disorders, and in extreme cases, may even prove fatal.
During this special operation, the DCA conducted unannounced inspections at 20 gyms scattered across Hyderabad, collaborating closely with local law enforcement.
Inspections took place in areas including Secunderabad, Mehdipatnam, Tolichowki, Malakpet, Punjagutta, Narsingi, Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Madhapur, Kothapet, Kukatpally, and Suraram, as stated by Shahnawaz Qasim, Director General of DCA.
According to the DCA, the misuse of anabolic-androgenic steroids presents considerable health hazards. These substances, frequently exploited by bodybuilders to boost muscle mass, can cause a wide range of detrimental effects such as cardiovascular issues, liver damage, mood swings, and hormonal imbalances. Additionally, prolonged misuse may lead to severe complications including infertility, kidney failure, and psychiatric disorders.
The Mephentermine Sulphate Injection, primarily a cardiac stimulant used to address low blood pressure (hypotension) during surgeries, should only be administered under a doctor’s supervision for specific conditions.
However, this injection is being misappropriated to enhance endurance among bodybuilders. The DCA revealed that certain gyms are unlawfully distributing Mephentermine injections to gym-goers who misuse them for improved athletic performance in competitive sports or bodybuilding.
Gyms found in violation of stocking or selling prescription medications will face stringent legal repercussions under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940. Gym owners and staff are cautioned against such illegal activities and are urged to adhere to legal standards.
The illegal distribution and stockpiling of prescription drugs to gym-goers breach the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, and those involved face potential imprisonment of up to five years, as stated by Shahnawaz Qasim.
