Lahore, May 26 (NationPress) Torrential rains and intense thunderstorms have resulted in the tragic loss of at least 18 lives and left over 110 individuals injured in the Punjab province of Pakistan, as reported by local authorities on Monday.
The relentless downpour has caused significant damage, leading to the collapse of numerous homes throughout the region. According to the Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), the rain-related incidents have been unprecedented and exceeded forecasts. They acknowledged that while heavy rainfall was predicted, the extent of the storms was not expected.
So far, 124 incidents of structural failure have been documented in Punjab since Saturday, with most incidents attributed to solar panel installations on rooftops. Reports indicate that these solar panels were inadequately secured.
"Around 80 percent of the collapses involved solar panels. All but three of the incidents were due to these installations. We support solar technology, but it is crucial that these installations are safe to avert such disasters," stated PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia.
He urged residents to brace for worsening weather conditions, highlighting the correlation between rising temperatures and extreme climate phenomena. Kathia cautioned that Pakistan is experiencing the repercussions of a 1 to 1.5 degrees Celsius increase in global temperatures, revealing that 2025 marks the second consecutive summer to witness a sudden seven degrees Celsius rise, leading to severe heatwaves.
"To achieve a genuine reduction in temperature, we must undertake significant measures – including afforestation, improved urban planning, and collaborative initiatives across South Asia. Despite the government's introduction of various protective measures, such as water supply initiatives and early warning systems, there remains a critical need for regional collaboration and long-term strategies," he emphasized.
