28 Election Workers Succumbed After Indonesia's Historic Nationwide Regional Elections: Official

Jakarta, Dec 10 (NationPress) At least 28 individuals have tragically succumbed, mainly due to fatigue-related health issues, while assisting in the administration of Indonesia's first-ever nationwide simultaneous regional elections that took place last month, a senior official from the Home Affairs Ministry disclosed on Tuesday.

"As of last Sunday, 28 poll workers have died following the 2024 regional elections. The majority of these individuals passed away due to fatigue and heart attacks," stated Bima Arya Sugiarto, the deputy home affairs minister, during a meeting at the parliament building.

The world's largest-scale single-day regional elections were held on November 27 to elect governors, mayors, and regents across the nation's 37 provinces, 93 cities, and 415 regencies, spanning over 17,000 islands and three different time zones. Over 204 million voters participated by casting their ballots at polling stations, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

Sugiarto noted that during the country's 2019 presidential election, more than 700 election staff and over 70 supervisors lost their lives, while in the 2024 presidential election, the fatalities decreased to 181 election staff and 48 supervisors.

He assured that the ministry would carry out further evaluations to avert such occurrences in the future.

"This serves as our lesson for the future to enhance the system both technically and administratively," he remarked.
