Tragic Flash Floods and Landslides in West Java, Indonesia Claim Five Lives and Leave Seven Missing

Jakarta, Dec 6 (NationPress) Five bodies have been discovered, while seven individuals remain missing after flash floods and landslides wreaked havoc, destroying hundreds of homes and infrastructure in Indonesia's West Java province, according to an official's statement on Friday.

The natural calamities, which commenced on Tuesday, have impacted 589 residences and compelled 1,400 individuals to evacuate in Sukabumi regency, stated Hadi Rahmat, spokesperson for the provincial disaster management and mitigation agency. The disaster also led to the collapse of 10 bridges, hindering the mobility of residents, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

"Five victims’ bodies have been located. The search for the missing individuals continues. Initially, four people were reported missing, but the figure has now increased to seven," Rahmat informed Xinhua.

Out of the seven missing persons, five were victims of the landslides, while the reasons for the disappearance of the other two remain unclear, Rahmat elaborated. He indicated that search operations for the five landslide victims are concentrated in affected areas, whereas the search for the other two extends beyond these regions.

As per his report, two evacuation centers have been established to house evacuees and provide necessary logistics, medications, and other vital supplies. However, many survivors have chosen to seek refuge with relatives instead.
