Casualties Rise to 10 Due to Landslides and Floods in West Java, Indonesia

Jakarta, Dec 9 (NationPress) The recent hydrometeorological disasters affecting Sukabumi in Indonesia's West Java province have resulted in a tragic toll of at least 10 lives lost, with two more individuals reported as missing, as stated by the local disaster mitigation agency on Monday.

The acting chief of the Sukabumi Disaster Mitigation Agency, Deden Sumpena, reported that floods, strong winds, and landslides have impacted roughly 40 sub-districts, displacing around 900 families who have been compelled to seek temporary refuge, according to Xinhua news agency.

A coordinated rescue operation, involving both military and police personnel, is ongoing as they continue to evacuate residents and search for victims despite challenging weather conditions.

Previously, Indonesia's Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency issued a warning regarding the likelihood of further hydrometeorological disasters after identifying two developing tropical cyclones in proximity to Indonesia's territorial waters as of Monday.

The National Disaster Management Agency has called on local governments to bolster their disaster preparedness by ensuring the availability of necessary equipment, personnel, and resources, particularly in areas identified as having high risk, such as hills and cliffs.
