New Delhi, March 11 (NationPress) In a remarkable diplomatic and humanitarian initiative, the Government of India successfully orchestrated the release and return of 283 Indian citizens from Myanmar on Monday.
These individuals had been deceived into traveling to Southeast Asian nations, including Myanmar, through fraudulent job advertisements, only to find themselves coerced into cybercrime and various fraudulent operations at scam centers along the Myanmar-Thailand border.
As per a statement released by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Indian embassies in Myanmar and Thailand collaborated extensively with local authorities to enable the repatriation.
A dedicated Indian Air Force (IAF) aircraft was dispatched to bring the 283 nationals back to India from Mae Sot, Thailand. This action represents the latest in a series of initiatives by the Indian government to address human trafficking and cybercrime schemes in the region.
The MEA reiterated its previous advisories, urging vigilance regarding such fraudulent job proposals.
In a statement, the Ministry emphasized the necessity of verifying the credentials of foreign employers through Indian missions abroad and thoroughly investigating the backgrounds of recruiting agents and companies prior to accepting any job offers.
The government has consistently warned Indian citizens about such scams and the dangers of responding to unsolicited job proposals from unknown sources.
The repatriation was made feasible through the cooperation of Indian authorities, Myanmar’s Union authorities, and local organizations in the Myawaddy area of Myanmar, where many of the victims had been detained.
The Indian Embassy in Myanmar further underscored the success of the operation in a post on its official X handle: "In coordination with Myanmar's Union authorities and local groups, 283 Indian nationals at scam compounds in Myawaddy area of Myanmar were released and repatriated yesterday through Mae Sot in Thailand. Strongly reiterate our advice against such job offers."
Earlier on February 11, eight additional Indian nationals, part of a group of 19 foreigners, were deported from Myawaddy scam centers to Mae Sot, Thailand. "So far, 133 Indian nationals have been released. We reaffirm our warning against job offers in this area," stated the Indian Embassy in Myanmar on X.
