Kabul, Sep 4 (NationPress) In a significant operation, police unearthed 78 kg of opium poppy in the Takhar province of northern Afghanistan and apprehended an individual suspected of attempting to smuggle the illegal substance, as reported by provincial police spokesman Nizamudin Omir on Thursday.

The accused allegedly concealed 78 kg of opium poppy within the cavities of a vehicle, intending to transport it from Takhar to an undisclosed location. However, law enforcement officials recovered the contraband during a routine inspection and arrested the vehicle's owner, according to the spokesperson.

This marks the second incident of illegal drug discovery in northern Afghanistan within a span of three days. Earlier, police seized 18 kg of opium poppy and detained two individuals for smuggling in the Baghlan province on Tuesday, as reported by Xinhua News Agency.

In a previous operation in August, Afghan authorities incinerated 29.8 tonnes of illegal drugs that were confiscated during raids in Nangarhar province in eastern Afghanistan, as detailed in a statement from the office of the Deputy Minister of Interior for Counter-Narcotics.

The seized drugs included 1,442 kg of methamphetamine (ICE), 588 kg of heroin, 15,714 kg of hashish, 460 kg of opium poppy, among other narcotics, along with materials used in drug production, as stated in a report released on August 25.

The contraband was found during counter-narcotics operations in Jalalabad city and various districts in the province. The statement did not provide further details on whether additional narcotics were discovered. However, it indicated that 2,586 individuals were arrested for offenses related to smuggling, purchasing, and selling these illicit drugs, and their cases have been forwarded to judicial authorities for further action.

Moreover, law enforcement has apprehended 5,786 drug users in the province and transported them to rehabilitation centers for treatment, according to the report.

The Afghan interim government, which imposed a ban on poppy cultivation, drug processing, and trafficking in April 2022, has pledged to combat the drug trade until the country achieves a drug-free status.
