Dhaka, Aug 18 (NationPress) A Bangladeshi court has recently issued an order to arrest former Law Minister Anisul Huq concerning two cases associated with the protests from July of last year. In a separate incident, ex-Election Commission (EC) Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed was also detained based on allegations related to election manipulation, according to local news outlets.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Monirul Islam made this decision after the defendants were presented in court, complying with the request from investigation officers to officially record Anisul Huq's arrest.
Anisul Huq is implicated in two cases regarding the alleged murder of an electrician named Mohammad Shawon Sikder and the attempted murder of another individual, Ashraful alias Fahin, during the protests in Lalbagh last July, as reported by the leading Bangladeshi daily, Jugantor.
As per the case documents, local media highlighted that Shawon was shot on July 19 last year in front of Eden College in Dhaka while heading home amidst the protests. Following this, a case was filed on January 21 against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 40 other individuals.
In the second case, Ashraful lodged a complaint on May 25 against Hasina and 130 others, claiming he was shot during the protests on July 18 inside the Azimpur government colony, Dhaka.
Additionally, Helal Uddin has been arrested in connection with a case alleging election fraud and treason.
BNP leader Salah Uddin Khan initiated this case on June 22 at the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police station, accusing three former chief election commissioners and 24 others of manipulating elections from the 10th to the 12th parliamentary cycles.
On June 25, additional accusations of treason, fraud, and embezzlement were also levied against them.
