Dhaka, June 6 (NationPress) The Chief Advisor of the Bangladeshi interim government, Muhammad Yunus, announced on Friday that the nation's upcoming national elections are scheduled for a date in April 2026.
"I am here to inform the citizens that the next national elections will take place in the first half of April 2026," Yunus stated during a televised address to the nation, coinciding with the approaching celebration of Eid al-Adha on Saturday.
He mentioned that the Election Commission will provide a comprehensive election roadmap at an appropriate time.
Yunus also highlighted the accomplishments of the Interim Government over the past ten months, emphasizing its commitment to a three-point agenda: justice, reforms, and elections.
"We aim for maximum participation from voters, candidates, and political parties in the upcoming elections. Let this be remembered as the most free, fair, and impartial election in our history," Yunus asserted.
As calls for elections by December intensified, pressure mounted on Yunus from various political factions.
Salahuddin Ahmed, a member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), expressed earlier this week that it is entirely feasible to conduct national elections before December if necessary reforms are implemented through consensus.
"December is too late. The elections can happen sooner. If the reform proposals, apart from those requiring constitutional amendments, are accepted through consensus, they can be enacted in less than a month," Salahuddin was quoted as saying by local media during a discussion held by the Gono Odhikar Parishad on Tuesday.
He reiterated that there is no valid reason to postpone elections beyond December, stating, "We all support democracy and urge for a timely election to uphold the people's right to vote. No justification exists for delaying elections past December."
The interim government is under increasing pressure from various political groups, including the BNP, to conduct elections by the year's end.
The BNP remains optimistic about winning a majority in the elections, while Yunus is navigating the turbulent political landscape, advocating for democratic reforms before delaying polls until June 2026.
Last month, BNP's Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman called upon the youth and citizens to ensure that elections take place by December.
"Historically, caretaker governments in Bangladesh have demonstrated that national elections can be organized within three months. However, even after ten months, the interim administration led by Yunus has yet to announce an election date. The people of Bangladesh deserve better. We aspire for a nation free from authoritarianism, governed by a democratically elected administration that is accountable to its citizens," Rahman stated virtually during a BNP rally from London.
"If you wish to retain power, resign from your positions, side with the people, contest in the elections, and if victorious, return to lead the government," he concluded.
Meanwhile, Yunus is set to embark on another international trip to London from June 10-13 following Eid.
