Dhaka, July 23 (NationPress) The Chief Coordinator of the Bangladesh National Citizens Party (NCP), Hasnat Abdullah, on Wednesday called for the resignation of the interim government's health advisor, Nurjahan Begum, labeling her a “product of nepotism and favoritism” supported by Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus.
Speaking at a public rally in Chandpur district, the NCP leader asserted that the health advisor should return her salary and allowances and resign.
“We have a health advisor, do you know her? She arrived through the ‘brotherhood quota’ of Yunus. This health advisor exemplifies Yunus's nepotism. I have consistently argued that her position is unnecessary. Have you witnessed any substantial contributions from her? The salary she receives is unwarranted, and the government vehicle she utilizes is an affront to taxpayers. She lacks understanding of healthcare and the medical system. Her only merit is her connection to Grameen Bank and her proximity to Yunus,” Hasnat stated, as reported by Bangladesh's Bengali daily 'Jugantor'.
“The unfortunate reality is that she travels to Singapore for her own medical treatment. When we voice our concerns, they tend to react angrily. I raised the matter once, and since then, she has ceased communication with us. She ought to return her salary and allowances to the state treasury and resign immediately,” he added.
“Planes are crashing, buildings are collapsing; this is not the Bangladesh we envision,” Hasnat continued.
These comments followed a tragic plane crash in Dhaka on Monday that claimed 32 lives, primarily children, and injured over 165.
A newly-formed party, created by student leaders who previously collaborated with Yunus to oust the democratically-elected Awami League government led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, is now experiencing discord, with their much-publicized unity waning.
After the crash of a Bangladesh Air Force Chinese-made F-7 BGI training aircraft on Monday, significant protests erupted at the crash site and outside the Secretariat in the capital, as students demanded the immediate resignation of Yunus’s interim government Education Advisor and Education Secretary.
The interim government's law and education advisors, along with Yunus's Press Secretary, faced strong protests from students who challenged their resignations, claiming the government's information about the crash was erroneous.
The protestors insisted on the publication of a correct list of the deceased and injured, along with compensation details for the victims' families.
They also demanded an immediate cessation of the use of outdated and unsafe training aircraft operated by the Bangladesh Air Force.
