Maputo/New Delhi, Sep 9 (NationPress) On Tuesday, India sent medical assistance to Mozambique via a Coast Guard vessel, aiming to enhance the healthcare capabilities of this southern African nation, as per the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
India is committed to supporting its vital partner in the Global South - Mozambique. The initial delivery of aid was made through an Indian Coast Guard ship. This shipment includes medications, surgical supplies, and consumables designed to bolster Mozambique's healthcare resources. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal shared on X.
India maintains a long-standing, friendly relationship with Mozambique, with trade connections dating back centuries, even before the colonial period.
Earlier in June, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh visited Mozambique, engaging with Foreign Minister Maria Manuela dos Santos Lucas to explore avenues for enhancing bilateral relations.
Following their meeting, Singh expressed his satisfaction on X, stating, "It was a pleasure to meet HE Ms. Maria Manuela dos Santos Lucas, Foreign Minister of Mozambique, in Maputo. We reviewed the status of our bilateral relations and discussed strategies to further strengthen India-Mozambique connections. Our nations stand to gain significantly from these enhancing ties."
MoS Singh, along with Mozambican Health Minister Ussene Hilario Isse, also inaugurated the Jaipur Foot Camp at the Central Hospital in Maputo.
"We launched the Jaipur Foot (artificial limb fitting) camp in Maputo with Mozambique's Health Minister, HE Dr. Ussene Hilario Isse. Sponsored by the Government of India, this camp aims to provide artificial limbs to approximately 1200 recipients, making a positive difference in their lives and the lives of their families," he noted on X.
Diplomatic relations were established immediately following Mozambique's independence in 1975, with India being among the first countries to open a diplomatic mission there. The Indian Ambassador was present at the inaugural flag hoisting ceremony of independent Mozambique on June 25, 1975.
