Dhaka, June 27 (NationPress) The interim government of Bangladesh, led by Mohammad Yunus, has announced the creation of a five-member committee tasked with probing alleged irregularities, corruption, and administrative collusion related to the national elections conducted in 2014, 2018, and 2024. This decision comes amidst a growing political crackdown on the Awami League and increasing demands for electoral accountability.
The Cabinet Division released a gazette notification on Thursday evening, outlining that the committee will also propose recommendations to ensure fair elections in the future, according to local media sources.
The notification highlighted that the three general elections from 2014 to 2024 faced significant domestic and international criticism. Allegations suggest that these elections were manipulated to secure victories for the ruling Awami League, effectively depriving citizens of their right to vote.
“To uphold the people's voting rights, protect democracy, and prevent the emergence of fascism and authoritarianism, the interim government is committed to investigating the corruption, irregularities, and unlawful activities associated with these elections,” the gazette stated.
Chief Advisor Yunus expressed on social media that there are evident accusations against those responsible for the 2014, 2018, and 2024 elections for “violating the constitutional system of Bangladesh, which mandates governance by elected representatives.”
“In light of this, the government has resolved to investigate the corruption and irregularities of these elections to ensure future voting rights for the public, fortify democracy, and counter the threats of fascism and authoritarianism. The Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh has thus formed a ‘Committee to Investigate Allegations Related to the Past Three National Parliamentary Elections and Provide Recommendations for Fair Elections in the Future’,” stated Yunus in a post on X.
The committee is reported to be headed by former High Court Justice Shamim Hasnain.
Additional members include former additional secretary Shamim Al Mamun, Associate Professor Quazi Mahfujul Hoque Supan from the law department at Dhaka University, Barrister Tajriyaan Akram Hussain, and Election Expert Md Abdul Alim.
According to a report from Bangladeshi daily Prothom Alo, the committee's duties include evaluating the role of the previous election commission and its secretariat, as well as the involvement of law enforcement and intelligence agencies. The committee will also recommend changes to ensure fair elections moving forward.
Additionally, the committee is set to examine the actions of the ruling party and others in limiting political participation and hindering the exercise of voting rights while investigating allegations of financial misconduct against the previous election commission.
The Cabinet Division will reportedly provide secretarial support to the committee during its investigation, with a directive to submit its findings to the government by September 30.
Analysts perceive these developments as a significant political vendetta by the Yunus administration targeting former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's party.
Following Hasina's ouster in August 2024, the Yunus-led administration issued multiple arrest warrants against Hasina, her family, and supporters of the Awami League on seemingly baseless charges.
Many view Hasina's abrupt departure last August as a critical blow to the democratic framework of the country. Moreover, the interim government has faced substantial backlash for allegedly providing refuge to radical Islamic groups.
