BRG claims killing six Pakistani personnel in Balochistan's Sibi highway blockade
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
The Baloch Republican Guards (BRG) on Friday, 17 October 2025 claimed responsibility for killing six Pakistani military personnel during a highway blockade in Balochistan's Sibi district, according to local media reports. The claim came as a separate explosion destroyed a police station in Chagai district in a wave of militant activity across the restive province.
What Happened in Sibi
BRG spokesperson Dostain Baloch said in a statement that fighters from the group blocked the main highway in Sibi's Mithri area on Thursday and began searching vehicles. When Pakistani forces attempted to advance on the blockade, a prolonged clash ensued, according to the BRG's account. The group claimed six personnel were killed on the spot and several others were wounded, as reported by The Balochistan Post.
Following the clash, the spokesperson said BRG fighters seized a nearby police post after its personnel fled, took control of equipment and motorcycles, and set the facility on fire. Reiterating the group's position, Dostain Baloch said: 'Our operations of this kind will continue until Balochistan achieves complete independence.'
Police Station Blown Up in Chagai
In a separate incident in Balochistan's Chagai district, armed men stormed the Yakmach police station in the early hours of Thursday, planted a large quantity of explosives and detonated them, completely destroying the structure. Police officials confirmed the building was razed but said no casualties were reported. The attackers also fired on and destroyed several security cameras in Yakmach Bazaar. No group has claimed responsibility for the Yakmach attacks as of the time of reporting.
Pattern of Escalating Violence in the Area
The incidents are part of a documented uptick in militant activity across Balochistan. As recently as 5 October, armed fighters blocked the Quetta–Taftan highway and set ablaze a National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) office in Yakmach — an attack the Balochistan Liberation Front (BLF) subsequently claimed.
Earlier this week, the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) claimed responsibility for 16 separate attacks across different regions of Balochistan over a six-day period from 7 to 12 October. BLA spokesperson Jeeyand Baloch said in a statement on Monday that the operations involved military convoy targeting, improvised explosive device (IED) strikes, sniper attacks, and highway blockades, resulting in the deaths of dozens of Pakistani personnel and injuries to several others, according to the group's claims.
Broader Context
Balochistan has long been the site of a low-intensity insurgency, with multiple armed groups — including the BRG, BLA, and BLF — conducting operations against Pakistani military and government infrastructure. The Pakistani government has characterised these groups as separatist militants; the groups themselves frame their campaign as a struggle against what they describe as military occupation. Independent verification of casualty figures and operational claims from either side remains difficult given restricted media access in the region.
The frequency and geographic spread of recent attacks suggest a coordinated intensification of militant activity that Pakistani security forces will be under pressure to respond to.
