Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Washington, March 4 (NationPress) Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada and India are establishing a new strategic alliance across vital sectors such as energy, innovation, and artificial intelligence, underscoring the increasing economic collaboration between the two nations.
During a press briefing in Sydney, Carney emphasized that this deeper engagement with India is indicative of the evolving global environment and both countries' aspirations to enhance their economic and technological connections.
"Canada and India are embarking on a new strategic partnership in energy, talent, innovation, and artificial intelligence," he stated, following his landmark visit to India.
Carney remarked that a comprehensive economic agreement is anticipated to be pivotal in boosting bilateral trade.
"Central to this partnership is the new comprehensive economic partnership agreement, which we aim to finalize this year," he noted.
The Canadian Prime Minister also highlighted that recent discussions in India have already yielded substantial commercial agreements.
"In India, we secured over $5 billion in commercial agreements," he added.
These agreements are expected to strengthen collaboration between Canadian and Indian businesses and attract investments into both nations' communities.
"These agreements will help double our two-way trade to over $70 billion by 2030," Carney explained.
Additionally, energy cooperation is a key component of the growing partnership, which includes collaboration in civil nuclear energy.
"The government of India and KO's $2.6 billion uranium supply agreement will bolster India’s civil nuclear energy program and our mutual commitment to clean, reliable base load power," he elaborated.
Carney also underscored the importance of collaboration in education and innovation.
"We have also launched the Canada-India Talent and Innovation Strategy, supported by 13 educational partnerships between our leading universities," he commented.
He noted that interactions between the two governments have significantly increased in recent months.
"The level of engagement between the Canadian and Indian governments over the past year has exceeded that of the previous two decades," Carney remarked.
This renewed collaboration reflects shifting global dynamics and both countries' goals to diversify their partnerships, he said.
"This is a reflection of today's world and the ambitions of both our nations to build and diversify," he added.
Carney made these remarks during a press interaction where he fielded questions from journalists from various international and Canadian media outlets. He is currently traveling in the Indo-Pacific region, where he is also set to meet with Australian leaders and business groups to enhance economic and strategic collaboration.
Both India and Canada are exploring broader cooperation in areas such as clean energy, trade, technology, and education as they seek to deepen their engagement throughout the Indo-Pacific.
