Los Angeles, Jan 10 (NationPress) Wildfires continue to surge through Los Angeles County, marking a disastrous 'Black Swan' event of unparalleled magnitude in the history of the United States' most populated county.
The fires, regarded as some of the most destructive in the region's past, have resulted in at least 10 fatalities, according to the county medical examiner's office.
Among the active blazes, the Palisades Fire has consumed 19,978 acres (80.85 square km) with only six percent containment as of Thursday night. In addition, the Eaton Fire has scorched 13,690 acres (55.4 square km) and remains entirely uncontained.
For individuals like Michael, an accountant in Altadena where the Eaton Fire started, the destruction has been life-altering. He was evacuated moments before his residence was engulfed by flames.
"It's akin to experiencing Armageddon," he stated, holding back tears. "We've lost everything."
As per Los Angeles Fire Chief Kristin Crowley, the wildfires, which ignited Tuesday night, are ranked among the county's most devastating natural disasters. Over 10,000 structures have been destroyed thus far, primarily due to the Palisades and Eaton fires.
In Malibu, authorities reported the first casualty from the Palisades Fire on Thursday. The cause of death is still under investigation. Malibu Mayor Doug Stewart expressed deep sorrow, extending condolences to the victim's family.

Currently, firefighters are battling four significant wildfires: Palisades Fire, Eaton Fire, Sunset Fire in the Hollywood Hills, and Hurst Fire in Sylmar.

Dorothy, a retired school administrator who lived in Pacific Palisades for 40 years, has lost her home and all its contents.
"The entire area is obliterated. It's just heartbreaking," she stated. "Even if there were homes available to purchase, they would cost millions. Who can afford that?" she told Xinhua news agency.
The entertainment sector has also faced significant repercussions. Studios such as Disney and Universal have halted filming, canceled premieres, and closed offices due to hazardous fire and smoke conditions.
Initial estimates suggest that the economic fallout from the wildfires ranges from $52 billion to $57 billion, surpassing the devastation caused by California's wildfires in 2018. JP Morgan analysts predict that insured losses could exceed $20 billion, marking these fires as considerably more severe than the Camp Fire, which resulted in $10 billion in insured losses.
The devastation in high-value areas like Malibu and Pacific Palisades is expected to further inflate costs. Many affected properties lacked insurance due to rising risks and policy non-renewals in wildfire-prone zones.
Experts caution that these fires underscore the escalating threats posed by climate change, with widespread implications for California's economy and its strained insurance market.
