Berlin, July 27 (NationPress) German Chancellor Friedrich Merz engaged in a phone discussion with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday, voicing deep concerns regarding the dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
As per a statement issued by the German government, during the call, Merz advocated for an immediate ceasefire and emphasized the necessity for urgent humanitarian assistance to be delivered to the desperate civilians in Gaza quickly, securely, and at the necessary scale, according to the Xinhua news agency.
Germany is set to determine its role in ameliorating the situation in the following days, in coordination with its E3 partners (France and Britain), as well as the United States and Arab nations, the statement added.
On Thursday, French President Macron revealed that France plans to officially recognize the state of Palestine in September, asserting that the current urgent priority is to halt the conflict in Gaza and safeguard the civilian populace.
"We must finally establish the State of Palestine, guarantee its sustainability, and allow it, through its demilitarization and full recognition of Israel, to contribute to the security of all in the Middle East," he expressed on social media.
While France would emerge as the leading European nation to recognize a Palestinian state, numerous countries have declared intentions to affirm Palestinian statehood following the onset of Israel's bombardment of Gaza nearly two years ago in response to Hamas' assaults.
Senior official from the Palestinian Authority, Hussein al-Sheikh, endorsed the decision, stating it reflects France's commitment to international law and support for the rights of the Palestinian people to self-determination and the establishment of their own independent state.
Hamas welcomed Macron's commitment as a "positive development toward justice for our oppressed Palestinian population and their legitimate right to self-determination."
"We urge all nations globally—especially European countries and those yet to recognize the State of Palestine—to follow France's example," it added.
