New Delhi, April 10 (NationPress) More than 70 percent of India’s electricity generation is reliant on coal, stated Union Minister of Coal and Mines, G. Kishan Reddy, on Thursday. He emphasized the importance of harmonizing development with sustainability, speeding up responsible mine closure practices, and consistently enhancing environmental standards.
The minister visited the Gevra mine of South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) in Chhattisgarh. Acknowledged as the world’s second-largest coal mine, Gevra epitomizes India’s increasing energy prowess.
Referring to Gevra as the nation's pride, the minister asserted, “One can delay food, but electricity must not be postponed. Our coal miners are the ones who ensure the nation remains illuminated and energized.”
At the mine viewpoint, SECL officials delivered a comprehensive presentation showcasing significant achievements and current projects.
Reddy honored coal miners, including women, for their steadfast commitment to maintaining continuous coal production—an essential cornerstone of India’s energy security.
The minister observed extensive mining operations, featuring massive machinery like the 42-cubic-meter shovel and 240-ton dumper, which rank among the largest Heavy Earth Moving Machines (HEMMs) utilized globally.
He also evaluated the blast-free surface miner technology in action and toured modern Silos developed under the First Mile Connectivity (FMC) initiative, which focuses on sustainable and eco-friendly coal evacuation.
Reddy engaged with machine operators within their cabins, uplifting their spirits and recognizing their crucial role in coal production.
During the visit, the minister explored SECL’s green initiatives, including the Miyawaki plantation pilot site, where saplings were planted using the innovative Japanese afforestation method. He also inaugurated the newly constructed Kalyan Mandap—a versatile facility for employee gatherings and community events.
Reddy’s interactions and hands-on engagement resonated profoundly with the workforce, reaffirming the government's commitment to empowering the true energy champions of the nation.
