Hong Kong, Nov 28 (NationPress) The number of fatalities in a devastating fire that erupted in a residential complex in Hong Kong has tragically surged to 128, with the HKSAR government warning that this figure may continue to increase.

The Fire Services Department has deployed 304 fire engines and rescue vehicles, along with drones to assess heat levels to avert rekindling. As reported by Xinhua News Agency, firefighters have successfully extinguished flames in four of the buildings affected while managing to control the fire in the remaining three.

The residential area known as Wang Fuk Court encompasses eight buildings, all surrounded by green mesh and scaffolding due to an ongoing renovation project. Three men involved in the renovations have been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter, as the police inquiry has indicated that flammable materials on the buildings may have contributed to the rapid fire spread. This incident is regarded as one of the most catastrophic fires Hong Kong has witnessed in decades.

On Thursday morning, Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee announced that the fire at Wang Fuk Court was gradually being controlled thanks to the relentless efforts of firefighters.

During a press briefing, Lee indicated that approximately 279 individuals are currently unaccounted for, while 29 remain hospitalized, including seven in critical condition. Lee expressed profound sorrow over the situation.

He noted that three buildings now show no visible flames, while sporadic fire spots remain in four others.

Lee emphasized that the government will mobilize all available resources to fully back the rescue efforts. He has directed various departments to ensure thorough operations, including extinguishing the fire, rescuing trapped residents, treating the injured, supporting families emotionally, and conducting a comprehensive investigation into the tragedy.

The Fire Services Department received alerts about the incident at around 2:51 p.m. local time on Wednesday. Due to the intense blaze, the department escalated the alarm to a No. 5 fire alert at 6:22 p.m. local time, with rescue operations still in progress.

At one of the temporary shelters, personnel from the Home Affairs Department, Civil Aid Service, Care Teams, and the Police Force collaborated effectively, fulfilling their roles and coordinating efforts.

Lam Yick Kuen, a member of the Tai Po Care Team and district councillor, remarked that numerous organizations and individuals have generously donated supplies, illustrating solidarity and mutual support during this crisis.
