Brussels, July 14 (NationPress) The Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen has expressed strong disapproval of the Trump administration's warning to impose a 30 percent tariff on exports from the European Union (EU), labeling it as absolutely unacceptable during a joint press briefing with EU trade chief Maros Sefcovic on Monday.
Rasmussen emphasized that the EU perceives this threat as unjustified and stands ready to react if discussions with Washington do not yield a satisfactory result.
He stated, "We are dedicated to continuing our collaboration with the United States toward a negotiated solution," adding that any agreement must be mutually beneficial for both parties.
The EU is poised to implement robust countermeasures if necessary, as reported by Xinhua news agency. Sefcovic revealed that the bloc is considering potential counteractions valued at 72 billion euros (approximately 84 billion US dollars).
He asserted, "We must be ready for all scenarios, including well-thought-out measures to restore equilibrium in our transatlantic relationship," underscoring the importance of preparedness.
Sefcovic believes there remains a chance to continue negotiations, but insists that any agreement must receive support from all EU member states and the European Parliament.
In a statement on Sunday, German Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil asserted that the EU should take decisive action against the United States if tariff talks do not alleviate the growing global trade tension, as reported by the German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung.
Klingbeil's comments followed US President Donald Trump's warning of a 30 percent tariff on EU imports starting August 1, after previous negotiations failed to reach an agreement.
He urged an end to the rising trade disputes, stating, "Trump's tariffs create only losers. They threaten the American economy just as much as they harm European businesses."
Klingbeil emphasized that the EU does not require further threats or provocations, but rather, a fair agreement.
