In conversations with IANS, numerous members of the diaspora shared their perspectives.
Sadashiv Shetty, who hails from Mangalore and has been in Japan for over 20 years, stated, “Our PM Modi is truly commendable. In the past, people here were often unaware of who the Prime Minister of India was. However, over the last decade, we feel a sense of pride in our Indian identity, largely thanks to PM Modi. His achievements across various sectors are remarkable, and I felt immense pride in his visit to Japan.”
He further added, “It’s unjust to criticize PM Modi, considering the extensive development he has spearheaded in our country.”
Pradeep, a Pune native living in Japan, echoed similar sentiments, saying, “Every time PM Modi visits Japan, I feel a swell of pride. The progress he has made in the last decade is beyond words.”
Earlier in the day, PM Modi commenced his trip to China to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Tianjin, which is set to begin on Sunday, following a successful two-day visit to Japan.
The SCO summit, taking place in China from August 31 to September 1, marks PM Modi's first trip to China in seven years and his first since the Galwan Valley confrontation at the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in June 2020.
Before embarking on his dual-nation visit, PM Modi stated, “I will be traveling to China to partake in the SCO Summit in Tianjin, at the invitation of President Xi Jinping. India actively contributes to the SCO, and during our Presidency, we've introduced innovative ideas and fostered collaboration in areas such as health, innovation, and cultural exchanges.”
He emphasized India’s commitment to working alongside SCO members to tackle common challenges and enhance regional collaboration.
“I am looking forward to engaging with President Xi Jinping, President Putin, and other leaders during the summit,” PM Modi remarked.
Both leaders previously met on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, in 2024, where significant progress was made in bilateral discussions, following an agreement regarding patrolling along the approximately 3,500-km LAC to resolve the prolonged border dispute.
The SCO is a permanent intergovernmental international organization founded in Shanghai on June 15, 2001. Its member countries include China, Russia, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, Iran, and Belarus.
Additionally, the SCO has two observer states, Afghanistan and Mongolia, along with 14 dialogue partners, including Turkey, Kuwait, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Cambodia, and Nepal. Other partners include Sri Lanka, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Qatar, Bahrain, the Maldives, Myanmar, and the United Arab Emirates.
During his time in Japan, PM Modi engaged in a series of high-level discussions with the nation's leadership and participated in the 15th India-Japan Annual Summit.
He also met with the governors of Japan's 16 prefectures, emphasizing the potential for collaboration between Japanese prefectures and Indian states through innovative initiatives and partnership development. He urged them to be part of “India's growth narrative.”
