Geneva, Jan 1 (NationPress) A devastating explosion followed by a fierce fire has struck the 'Le Constellation' bar located in the Crans-Montana ski resort in the Valais region of southwestern Switzerland on New Year's Eve, resulting in numerous fatalities and injuries, according to local authorities who spoke on Thursday.

Reports indicate that several dozen individuals are feared dead, and approximately 100 others have been injured as a result of the explosion and fire. Many of the injured have sustained serious wounds and have been transported to hospitals in Sion, the capital of Valais canton, and other nearby cities, as stated by Valais Canton Police Chief Frederic Gisler during a press briefing.

In light of the tragedy, the Valais cantonal administration declared a special situation to enable a swift response and mobilization of emergency resources. The State Council announced this emergency declaration.

Emergency services, including extensive police, fire, and rescue teams, were promptly dispatched to the site to assist the many victims.

"To ensure the rapid deployment of all necessary resources over the coming days and to effectively manage the aftermath of this tragic incident, the Council of State has declared a special situation effective from 9:00 a.m. on January 1, 2026. The operation is ongoing. The public is urged to adhere strictly to the authorities' directives and avoid the affected area. A helpline has been established for families. The Council of State extends its heartfelt condolences to the victims, their families, and all affected by this tragedy," a statement from the local administration read.

Meanwhile, the Xinhua news agency reported that an investigation is currently underway to ascertain the cause of the explosion, although authorities have ruled out any possibility of a deliberate attack. Helicopters and ambulances, including those arriving from abroad, rushed to the scene, as the intensive care units and operating rooms of local hospitals are at maximum capacity, according to local officials at the press conference.

The President of the Swiss Confederation, Guy Parmelin, has postponed his scheduled New Year's address to express condolences to the victims' families.
