Khartoum, May 10 (NationPress) At least 19 inmates lost their lives and over 45 others were injured as a result of a drone strike aimed at a central prison in El Obeid, located in western Sudan's North Kordofan State, on Saturday. This information was reported by a medical source and eyewitnesses.

A medical professional at El-Obeid Hospital, who chose to remain anonymous, informed Xinhua news agency that the bodies of the 19 deceased and the injured individuals had been brought to the hospital, adding that "the casualty count is likely to increase."

An eyewitness present near the central prison stated to Xinhua, "three drones released around five missiles targeting the prison, with about three accurately hitting the building and the inmates' living quarters."

Another witness reported, "Rescue efforts inside the prison are still in progress, and the death and injury toll is greater than what has been officially declared."

As of now, there has been no official comment regarding the incident.

The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have recently escalated drone strikes on military installations and significant structures in regions controlled by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), including El Obeid.

Local media have stated that the RSF has continued its drone assaults for the seventh consecutive day on Port Sudan, which has effectively become the nation’s administrative center since May 2023. The RSF has yet to respond to the reports.

Since mid-April 2023, Sudan has been in the grip of a catastrophic conflict between the SAF and the RSF, resulting in the loss of tens of thousands of lives, although the precise toll remains unverified. The International Organization for Migration estimates that more than 15 million individuals have been displaced, both within Sudan and to other countries.
