Khartoum, March 21 (NationPress) At least 10 military personnel and journalists lost their lives in a drone strike aimed at a military and media assembly within the Republican Palace in Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, as reported by a military source.

A military source, who wished to remain anonymous, stated, 'A suicide drone targeted the outer courtyard of the palace, leading to the deaths of approximately 10 military personnel and journalists.'

According to an eyewitness, the drone fired two projectiles into the palace's outer courtyard while 'soldiers of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) were commemorating the takeover of the palace, alongside a Sudan TV crew covering the event.'

Another witness informed Xinhua that the casualties included two military media officers, several soldiers from the SAF's moral guidance division, and three members of the official Sudan TV, with expectations that the death toll may surpass 10.

This incident occurred after the SAF reportedly regained control of the Republican Palace on Friday, which had been under the control of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since mid-April 2023.

On the same day, the RSF declared in a statement that the struggle for the palace is 'far from over,' emphasizing that their forces remain nearby and continue to engage in combat.

The RSF also asserted that they had conducted a military operation within the palace, resulting in the deaths of 89 army personnel and the destruction of several military vehicles.

Sudan has been mired in a grave conflict between the SAF and the RSF since mid-April 2023, which has resulted in nearly 30,000 fatalities, according to data from the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data, a crisis monitoring organization referenced by the United Nations.

Furthermore, the conflict has displaced over 15 million individuals, both internally and externally, as per estimates from the International Organisation for Migration.
