Key Takeaways
New Delhi/Dhaka, Feb 18 (NationPress) The External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar expressed his congratulations to Khalilur Rahman for his recent appointment as the Foreign Minister of Bangladesh under the newly formed government led by Tarique Rahman.
Khalilur Rahman took the oath of office on Tuesday at the South Plaza of the Parliament complex, alongside 49 other Cabinet members within the new BNP-led administration.
The EAM expressed optimism about enhancing India-Bangladesh relations.
In a message on X, EAM Jaishankar stated, "Congratulations to Dr Khalilur Rahman on assuming office as the Foreign Minister of Bangladesh. I look forward to collaborating to strengthen our partnership for shared progress and prosperity."
Prior to this role, Khalilur Rahman served as the National Security Advisor during the interim government headed by Muhammad Yunus.
This appointment is notable as the BNP had previously called for his resignation in May 2025, criticizing his policies.
It follows remarks made by Khalilur Rahman during an event at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka last May, where he was questioned about his residency in the US. He cited Tarique Rahman, who was then living in self-imposed exile in the UK, suggesting that similar allegations could be directed at him.
These comments drew significant backlash from the BNP at the time.
In related news, National Citizen Party (NCP) leader and MP Nahid Islam stated on Tuesday that Khalilur Rahman's inclusion in the cabinet has raised suspicions of "election engineering, result manipulation, and constitutional reform complications," as reported by leading Bangladeshi newspaper, The Daily Star.
"If Khalilur Rahman serves as a minister in the BNP government, it raises doubts about whether he acted on behalf of that party during the interim government," Islam was quoted as saying by the newspaper.
