EU Implements New Legislation to Fortify Cybersecurity

Brussels, Dec 3 (NationPress) The Council of the European Union (EU) has officially enacted two significant laws to strengthen the bloc's defenses against cyber threats and to encourage greater cyber solidarity among its member states.

These new laws, forming part of the EU's broader cybersecurity legislative package, consist of the “Cyber Solidarity Act” along with a targeted amendment to the Cybersecurity Act (CSA). The intention behind these initiatives is to enhance the EU's readiness and response capabilities in the face of cyber incidents, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

The new regulations also include the creation of a cybersecurity alert system that will feature both national and cross-border cyber hubs. According to the Council's website, these hubs will utilize artificial intelligence and advanced data analytics to identify and mitigate cyber threats.

Additionally, the legislation promotes testing capabilities in critical sectors such as healthcare, transportation, and energy. It also facilitates incident response services from the private sector, which can be activated upon request by any EU member state or institution in the event of a significant cyber incident.

Moreover, a new incident review mechanism will be set up to evaluate the efficacy of the emergency response system.

The Council highlighted that these measures are essential in light of the increasing frequency and severity of cybersecurity incidents occurring worldwide.

This legislation will be published in the EU's Official Journal in the upcoming weeks and will come into effect 20 days following its publication.
