Key Takeaways
Canberra, Jan 9 (NationPress) Thousands of individuals have been instructed to evacuate their residences, with three individuals currently unaccounted for in the midst of a severe bushfire crisis impacting the southeastern Australian state of Victoria.
As of Friday, authorities reported 30 active bushfires raging across Victoria, which are anticipated to be unpredictable, uncontrollable, and rapidly spreading due to catastrophic conditions, with temperatures soaring above 40 degrees Celsius compounded by strong winds.
During a press briefing alongside emergency service officials and state Premier Jacinta Allan, Victoria Police Deputy Commissioner Bob Hill confirmed that three individuals are missing, according to Xinhua News Agency.
On Thursday, officials from the Country Fire Authority (CFA) advised a family of two adults and one child to evacuate their property in central Victoria immediately due to a life-threatening fire nearby.
Upon returning to the site later that day, authorities found the property had been completely destroyed.
"Those three individuals are currently unaccounted for," he stated.
Multiple residences have been confirmed destroyed in the central Victorian town of Ruffy, located 105 km northeast of Melbourne, prompting evacuation orders for residents in surrounding towns as well as those in the far northeast of the state.
A catastrophic fire danger rating has been announced for four regions in Victoria, marking a significant event as it is the first time since 2019 that multiple regions have received the highest-level rating on the same day.
Allan expressed that Friday is expected to be one of the most perilous fire days Victoria has faced in several years, urging the thousands under evacuation orders to leave without delay.
"Fires are widespread across the state, and conditions are already extremely hazardous," she remarked.
"I cannot emphasize this enough. If you are still in a location where you have been advised to evacuate, you must leave immediately."
CFA Chief Fire Officer Jason Heffernan indicated that temperatures could reach up to 46 degrees Celsius in northern Victoria on Friday, with dry lightning strikes expected to impact central regions in the afternoon.
