Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico on Monday, 15 June publicly congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on becoming India's longest continuously serving democratically elected Prime Minister, describing the achievement as a 'political miracle'. The remarks came during a joint press conference in Bratislava following bilateral discussions between the two leaders.

What Fico Said

'I cannot omit the political stability which you represent, Mr Prime Minister, in India. I congratulate you to the fact that you are the longest serving Prime Minister in India,' Fico said, addressing Modi directly.

'Consecutively for 12 years, in such a difficult environment, when you have so many political parties in such a comprehensive environment, this is like a political miracle. I want to congratulate you for this,' he added.

A Week of Global Congratulations

Fico's remarks follow a similar tribute from French President Emmanuel Macron on Sunday, who congratulated Modi while speaking at the inauguration of the 'Bharat Innovates 2026' event in Nice. Macron called Modi's presence at the venue a matter of great honour for France.

'A few days ago you became the Prime Minister with the longest serving time since the Independence of India. This long run says a lot about your determination, the strength of your country,' Macron said. Over the past week, Modi has received similar congratulatory messages from several heads of state and government across the world.

Historic First Visit to Slovakia

Prime Minister Modi is on a State Visit to the Slovak Republic at the invitation of Prime Minister Fico — the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Slovakia since the country gained independence in 1993. In Bratislava, Modi was accorded a ceremonial welcome at the historic castle, followed by delegation-level and one-on-one meetings with Fico.

Modi is also scheduled to meet Slovak President Peter Pellegrini at the Presidential Palace, where a state banquet will be hosted in his honour.

Bilateral Agenda: Trade, Defence and Technology

Beyond the ceremonial exchanges, the visit carries substantive economic weight. Modi and Fico are set to engage with Slovak business leaders to deepen investment flows and expand cooperation across transportation, renewable energy, emerging technology, and defence production.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) noted that India and Slovakia share engagements spanning trade and investment, defence, space, nuclear cooperation, digitalisation, cyber security, skill development, and academic and cultural exchanges. 'Bilateral relations between India and Slovakia have gathered momentum in recent years, marked by reciprocal high-level political exchanges from both sides,' the MEA stated.

The Bratislava leg of Modi's European tour underscores India's growing diplomatic footprint in Central Europe, a region that has historically received less attention from New Delhi than Western European capitals. This comes amid India's broader push to diversify strategic partnerships within the European Union, particularly in defence and technology supply chains.
