Atlanta, Jan 24 (NationPress) The Consulate General of India in Atlanta has conveyed its profound sorrow regarding a devastating shooting event in Georgia that resulted in the loss of four lives, including an Indian national. The Consulate has pledged its unwavering support to the grieving family.
In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), the Consulate stated, “We are deeply saddened by this tragic shooting incident linked to an alleged family dispute, which claimed the life of an Indian national. The alleged perpetrator has been apprehended, and we are providing all necessary assistance to the affected family.”
This announcement coincided with the Gwinnett County Police's ongoing investigation into a fatal domestic shooting that transpired early Friday morning in a neighborhood near Lawrenceville.
According to law enforcement, officers responded to a report of “shots fired” around 2:30 a.m. at the 1,000 block of Brook Ivy Court. Upon arrival, police found four adults inside the residence with gunshot wounds. All four victims, who were of Indian descent, were declared dead at the scene.
Authorities indicated that the incident was domestic in nature. Notably, three young children were present in the home during the shooting. In a remarkable display of composure, the children concealed themselves in a closet for safety. One of them managed to dial 911, providing crucial information that allowed the police to respond swiftly.
Thanks to their prompt action, officers arrived while the suspect’s vehicle was still parked in the driveway. Concerned that the shooter might still be nearby, police deployed K-9 units to conduct a thorough search. A police dog later led them to a nearby wooded area, where the suspect was apprehended without resistance, as reported by authorities.
The children emerged unharmed from the incident and were subsequently placed in the care of a family member.
On Friday afternoon, Gwinnett County Police named the suspect as Vijay Kumar, 51, of Atlanta. He faces multiple charges, including four counts of aggravated assault, four counts of felony murder, four counts of malice murder, one count of first-degree cruelty to children, and two counts of third-degree cruelty to children.
The victims have been identified as Kumar’s wife, Meemu Dogra, 43, also from Atlanta; along with Gourav Kumar, 33; Nidhi Chander, 37; and Harish Chander, 38, all residents of Lawrenceville.
Investigators revealed that a disagreement reportedly began between Dogra and Kumar at their home in Atlanta. The couple then proceeded to the Brook Ivy Court residence with their 12-year-old child, where the tragic shooting unfolded.
The investigation is still ongoing.
