Riyadh, May 14 (NationPress) In a pivotal moment under the Indian government's forward-thinking 'Lady Without Mehram' (LWM) initiative, the Ambassador of India to Saudi Arabia, Suhel Khan, and his wife welcomed an all-women Haj group from Kerala at the Jeddah Haj Terminal.
"Ambassador Suhel Khan, alongside his spouse Rifat Khan, greeted the all-female group of pilgrims from Kerala today at the Jeddah Haj Terminal. Thanks to the Government of India's progressive policy allowing women to undertake Haj without a male companion under the Lady Without Mehram category," the Embassy of India in Riyadh shared on X.

A record total of 4,558 female pilgrims undertook the pilgrimage without a Mehram (male companion) in 2024, marking the highest participation since the inception of the Ladies without Mehram category in Haj-2018.
According to the Ministry of Minority Affairs, traditionally, a significant barrier for Muslim women's participation was their dependency on a male haji, known as Mehram, for undertaking this sacred pilgrimage. This restriction was lifted by the Government of India in 2018, allowing women aged 45 and above to apply without a Mehram for Haj, enabling eligible women to join in groups of four.
In Haj-2023, for the first time, the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi permitted single eligible women to apply for Haj under the LWM category. This initiative led to unprecedented participation, with over 4,000 successful female applicants in Haj 2023, fostering greater confidence, personal freedom, and enhanced social mobility.
