Gaza, July 25 (NationPress) On Friday, Hamas reiterated its dedication to the ongoing ceasefire discussions, responding to the criticisms made by US Special Envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, regarding the group’s intentions in these talks.
In an official statement, Hamas expressed its surprise at the envoy's remarks, confirming that its participation in the diplomatic process is focused on achieving a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip.
The organization stated, "The movement has acted with a sense of national responsibility and flexibility throughout the negotiations," highlighting that it has provided responses to mediators after discussions with Palestinian factions and regional allies.
The group also mentioned that it has positively addressed the feedback and suggestions received from mediators, including those from Egypt, Qatar, and the United States, emphasizing its openness to further negotiations and commitment to the established mediation framework, according to Xinhua news agency.
Witkoff stated on Thursday that the United States will explore "alternative options" for a ceasefire in Gaza, noting that the US negotiating team is returning home from Qatar for consultations following Hamas' recent response, which he described as "selfish."
"We have decided to bring our team home from Doha for consultations after the latest response from Hamas, which clearly indicates a lack of willingness to reach a ceasefire in Gaza," he wrote on the social platform X.
"We will now evaluate alternative options to ensure the safe return of hostages and work towards creating a more stable environment for the people of Gaza," he added.
Reports from Palestinian and Israeli human rights organizations indicate that over 10,800 Palestinians are currently detained in Israeli prisons, facing torture, starvation, and medical neglect, leading to numerous fatalities.
Since July 6, indirect negotiations between Israel and Hamas have been ongoing in Doha, mediated by Qatar and Egypt with support from the US, aimed at securing a ceasefire and a prisoner exchange agreement.
