Dhaka, Oct 6 (NationPress) The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) of Bangladesh, A M M Nasir Uddin, emphasized on Monday the critical necessity of conducting the upcoming national elections, scheduled for February 2026, in a transparent and fair manner, as it holds the potential to define the nation's future, according to local media reports.
During an electoral discussion with prominent journalists in Dhaka, the CEC highlighted that ensuring a fair electoral process is vital not only for the Election Commission but also for the overall wellbeing of the country, as reported by the United News of Bangladesh (UNB). This discussion was attended by senior journalists and editors from various media organizations.
Nasir Uddin stated, "This election is likely to determine the future of our nation. We have no alternative but to make this election a success. Arranging a fair election is essential not just for the Election Commission but for our entire nation."
The CEC stressed that the elections need to be credible, free, fair, and participatory, noting that simply conducting elections for the sake of it, as seen in the past, would not suffice.
He appealed to the media to assist in raising public awareness regarding the Election Commission's initiatives, ensuring their efforts reach fruition. He encouraged journalists to inspire citizens to vote and foster public confidence in the Election Commission ahead of the parliamentary elections planned for February next year.
Last month, Nasir Uddin remarked that the Election Commission is navigating considerable challenges in the current context of Bangladesh.
During the Election Officers' Conference-2025 at Nirbachan Bhaban in Dhaka, he noted the numerous direct and indirect challenges the EC is facing while preparing for next year’s general elections and responding to various demands.
"Working in Bangladesh poses significant challenges. In the current scenario, while some find it easy to get things done, most face considerable difficulties. This is the reality of our nation," the CEC was quoted as saying by the leading Bengali daily, Prothom Alo.
Nasir Uddin assured that the Election Commission will not issue illegal directives to its officials nor will it favor any political party during the February 2026 elections.
"We will provide instructions, but none will be unlawful. We will not give directives to favor any party or act on behalf of anyone. Our guidance will strictly align with the established rules and laws for executing our duties correctly," he added.
Bangladesh is currently experiencing political uncertainty and conflicts as it approaches the next general elections.
Political factions that previously allied with interim Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus to unseat the democratically elected Awami League government led by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina are now embroiled in disputes over reform proposals.
