Seoul, Sep 24 (NationPress) South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has conveyed optimism regarding the potential for Seoul and Washington to devise a "reasonable" solution to finalize a bilateral trade agreement. This statement came during a meeting with foreign affairs experts in New York, as reported by the presidential office on Wednesday.
During a dinner gathering on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Lee discussed the ongoing trade negotiations with the United States, focusing on the efforts to finalize the specifics of a USD 350 billion investment commitment made under a comprehensive trade agreement established in late July, according to the Yonhap News Agency.
Lee elaborated on why South Korea cannot unconditionally accept the demands from the US and expressed a desire for both parties to seek a reasonable resolution, as highlighted in a release from the presidential office.
Among the attendees were notable figures like Kang Kyung-wha, president of the Asia Society and Lee's nominee for ambassador to the U.S.; Thomas Byrne, president of the Korea Society; Susan Elliott, president of the National Committee on American Foreign Policy; Kathleen Stephens, chair of the Board of the Korea Society; Ian Bremmer, president of the Eurasia Group; and Daniel Kurtz-Phelan, editor of Foreign Affairs.
The experts acknowledged the robust investment activities of South Korean companies in the U.S. and urged Seoul to enhance its engagement with the U.S. government, Congress, and local communities, offering support to address ongoing issues between the two nations, as stated by the office.
Lee also detailed Seoul's initiatives to reduce military tensions and pursue denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula.
He emphasized that Korea, the only nation divided globally, considers peace and stability on the peninsula essential for establishing a global peace framework.
Referring to US President Donald Trump as a leader with the capacity and determination to reach the goal, Lee committed to collaborating with Washington on a pragmatic strategy regarding North Korea, according to the office.
The attendees noted Trump's reaffirmation of his readiness to resume discussions with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un during their summit last month and expressed hope for progress in reducing tensions and promoting peace on the peninsula, as indicated in the report.
Trump and Kim have conducted three summits throughout Trump’s initial term.
