Sanaa, July 6 (NationPress) The Houthi armed forces of Yemen announced on Sunday morning that they were behind a hypersonic ballistic missile strike targeting Israel, which was reportedly intercepted earlier by Israeli defense systems. In a broadcast from the Houthi-controlled al-Masirah TV, military spokesperson Yahya Sarea indicated that the missile was aimed at Ben Gurion Airport in central Israel.
Sarea asserted that the missile strike succeeded in its goal, momentarily disrupting air traffic in Israel and prompting thousands of Israelis to seek shelter before dawn.
The Houthi spokesperson reiterated that they would persist in these attacks to support the Palestinian people in Gaza until the ongoing conflict and blockade are resolved. He also cautioned that the Houthi forces are prepared for any potential escalation by Israel, as reported by Xinhua.
The missile was launched earlier in the day, according to reports from al-Masirah TV.
Prior to dawn (Israel time), Israel's Channel 12 mentioned that a projectile launched from Yemen was intercepted by Israeli defense mechanisms, although fragments from the missile sparked a fire near Jerusalem. No further details were disclosed, and there have been no reported casualties.
On the previous day, an agreement was reached between Israel and Hamas to resume discussions in Qatar regarding hostages and a ceasefire.
The Houthis, who hold significant control over northern Yemen, have been actively targeting Israel since November 2023 as a show of solidarity with Palestinians amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
Yemen has been embroiled in conflict since 2014 when Houthi forces took control of the capital Sanaa and much of the northern regions, leading to a Saudi-led coalition's intervention in support of the internationally recognized government in 2015.
This war has resulted in one of the world's most severe humanitarian crises, with millions of Yemenis experiencing food shortages and lacking access to essential services. Numerous attempts at peace talks have failed to yield a political resolution.
