During an official banquet hosted in his honor by Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu in Male, Prime Minister Modi expressed his appreciation and reflected on the celebration of six decades of strong friendship between India and Maldives.
The Prime Minister remarked: "Last year, President (Mohamed Muizzu) visited India for a State Visit. Now, I have the privilege of being the first State Guest of his presidency."
Emphasizing the importance of the occasion, he said, "Being here as the Guest of Honour for the 60th Independence Day of the Maldives is a great honor for me. I am grateful for this invitation from the President. On behalf of all Indians, I send warm greetings to the people of the Maldives."
He noted that this visit coincides with significant milestones for both nations.
"This year marks both the 60th anniversary of India-Maldives relations and the 60th Independence Day of the Maldives, making my visit exceptionally special," PM Modi expressed.
Highlighting the civilizational and cultural connections, he noted, "Our shared heritage is as ancient as the monsoon and as delightful as Addu Bondi. Our languages showcase the richness of our cultures. Numerous words in Dhivehi have Indian origins... Our culinary preferences are also similar... Perfectly aligned yet distinct."
PM Modi emphasized the strength of people-to-people connections, stating, "The affectionate ties that have developed between our peoples over centuries remain robust today... This year, the number of tourists from India reached 1 million."
"Our two nations are allies within the Global South. Whether it be in infrastructure or capacity building, India has been a steadfast partner in Maldives' development journey. Together, we must advance in trade, security, and sustainable growth. The India-Maldives relationship is built on trust and thrives on goodwill. However, the bond between our peoples predates formal diplomacy. For centuries, the Indian Ocean has witnessed our shared narrative. As traders, travelers, and neighbors, we exchanged goods, stories, and ideas across these waters for centuries. It is the same ocean that unites us today with ties that no tide can sever," President Muizzu said as he congratulated PM Modi on becoming India's second longest-serving Prime Minister.
During the official banquet honoring PM Modi on his two-day visit to the Maldives, Muizzu commended the Prime Minister's leadership.
