Male, July 25 (NationPress) Highlighting that the future of the India-Maldives partnership is "indubitably and undeniably bright", Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated on Friday that he was unaware of the social media comment made by Abdulla bin Mohamed Ibrahim, the brother-in-law of Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu, regarding Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which has since been removed.
"This visit, along with Dr. Muizzu's trip to India last October, showcases the very robust and intimate relationship between the two nations. Our connections are sufficiently strong to endure transient remarks and have proven resilient through time," Misri responded to a local journalist's inquiry in Male about the now-deleted controversial post by Abdulla bin Mohamed Ibrahim that criticized PM Modi previously.
"Instead of dwelling on the past, I prefer to focus on the future. Considering everything that has transpired today and particularly in the past 9-10 months since President Mohamed Muizzu's visit to India, the future is undoubtedly and unquestionably bright," the Indian Foreign Secretary remarked, emphasizing the important agreements established between both nations during PM Modi's significant visit.
Muizzu, who previously campaigned on an 'India Out' platform just two years ago, personally welcomed PM Modi at the airport along with senior ministers on Saturday morning upon his arrival from the United Kingdom.
A striking symbol of India-Maldives camaraderie and respect, a large portrait of Prime Minister Modi adorned the Maldives Defence Ministry building in Male as PM Modi commenced his two-day State Visit to the Indian Ocean nation on Friday.
This marks Prime Minister Modi's third visit to the Maldives; he had previously visited in 2018 and 2019. This visit is also the first by any Head of State or Government during Mohamed Muizzu's presidency, which began in November 2023.
On Saturday, Prime Minister Modi will serve as the 'Guest of Honour' at the celebrations for the 60th anniversary of Maldives' independence, with 2025 also commemorating 60 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
"Landed in Male. I am deeply moved by President Muizzu's gesture of welcoming me at the airport. I am optimistic that India-Maldives friendship will reach new heights of success in the future," PM Modi shared on X.
Despite Muizzu's electoral campaign being less than amicable towards India, PM Modi was the first global leader to congratulate him after his electoral victory. Muizzu was also invited to attend the swearing-in ceremony of the new government in New Delhi last year.
The two leaders also met on the sidelines of the COP meeting in Dubai, following which President Muizzu made a State Visit to India in October 2024.
