Washington, Jan 20 (NationPress) Indian Americans residing in the Boston region commemorated Martin Luther King Jr. Day by hosting a complimentary community health camp, providing medical, dental, and vision services to hundreds of local residents as a homage to the civil rights leader’s enduring legacy of service and equality.
The Foundation of Indian Americans (FIA)–New England, in collaboration with partner organizations, organized the camp on January 19 at the Academy of Creative Arts in Burlington, Massachusetts, during the MLK Day weekend. This initiative was designed to pay tribute to Dr. King’s vision through hands-on community service, as stated in a media release issued on Monday.
Over 300 local residents benefited from health services provided at no charge, including medical examinations, dental evaluations, and vision screenings.
The camp received support from numerous healthcare professionals of Indian descent, encompassing various specialties such as vascular surgery, cardiology, psychiatry, primary care, dentistry, nutrition, physical therapy, and vision care. Additionally, free reading glasses were offered to those who needed them.
FIA–New England president Abhishek Singh remarked that the initiative was rooted in Dr. King’s principles. “We are moved by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream of equality and social harmony, and we aimed to honor his legacy by organizing a free community healthcare camp with complimentary vision checks and reading glasses,” he stated.
The healthcare camp attracted several influential Indian-American community leaders and local organization representatives, all expressing their support for this effort.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day is celebrated nationwide in the United States to honor the Nobel Peace Prize winner who spearheaded the civil rights movement through nonviolent means.
Community service activities conducted over the MLK Day weekend are widely viewed as effective means to embody Dr. King’s messages of dignity, compassion, and equality through action.
